This is the character that got me into graphic art. After graduating from OU with a psychology degree, I quickly discovered I didn't want to be a psychologist. I screwed around for a year working for Wal-Mart, trying to figure out what to do with myself. Long about April, my roomette's ex-girlfriend calls and asks me to draw a logo for her. She's working for a skateboard accessories company (Terminator Bearings) and the boss wants a devil, cause Mossimo has a devil and he's a fucking moron who can't come up with an original fucking idea (but I digress). Anyhow I end up drawing this cool devil in skate clothes, with these long pointy ears and "Chinese" eyes. They dig it, they want it and I'm to be paid ... jack squat. I can claim credit, and use it for my portfolio, but no scratch for the job.
But here's the trick. I never signed a work-for-hire contract, so fuck them, I'm making a character out of it. I know I would get my ass kicked in a lawsuit over it, but that would imply that I would ever be famous/successful/rich enough for it to be worth their while. And let's face it, that ain't ever gonna happen.
On the plus side, I actually enjoyed doing the work, more than I had doing anything in years. So I became a graphic artist. Now I get to make shit for other assholes, but at least I get paid.
